Lindy Hop Swing Dancing

The Lindy Hop is the original swing dance that emerged out of Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in the late 1920's & 1930's.  The name was coined in 1927 by dancer "Shorty" George Snowden, inspired by the day's headlines of Charles Lindbergh's flight: "LINDY HOPS THE ATLANTIC".  It draws from European partner dancing,  African earthy dance posture and an extension of earlier dances such as the Texas Tommy, Black Bottom & the Charleston. It was sometimes called the 'Jitterbug',  and went on to influence dances such as, West Coast Swing, Boogie Woogie & Rock'n'Roll. After virtually disappearing in the 60's, the Lindy Hop experienced a rebirth in the 80's as inspired young dancers sought out the teachings of Lindy's pioneers. The dance still thrives in communities around the world, from New York to Tokyo, where people are drawn to it's uniquely improvisational & joyful energy.

Our classes focus on teaching strong partner dancing and staying true to the original moves and fun-loving atmosphere of Lindy Hop. Come for our Beginner session to learn from the bottom up, with no partner needed.

Q & A

WHAT IS LINDY HOP?
Lindy Hop is the original swing dance that came out of Harlem, New York in the 1920's and 30's.  It is a partner dance that includes Charleston, Turns, Kicks, Blues dancing, and all tempos of music.  Sometimes referred to as Jive or Jitterbug, people are drawn to it's uniquely improvisational & joyful energy.

DO I NEED A PARTNER?
No. We rotate frequently so each person can learn how to dance socially with anyone and not just rely on hints from their partner.  We find this helps stop couples from arguing, and might save a marriage or two!  Also, the dance is very causal and friendly and rotating encourages a welcoming atmosphere.

CLOTHING?
Wear comfortable light clothes. We don't normally dress vintage unless there is a special event.

FOOTWEAR?
Comfortable flat shoes are essential.  They don't have to be dance shoes, a pair of sneakers is fine.  For our higher classes you can wear a sole with a bit more slip.  Either with suede on the sole, and even plain old duct tape.  Please non-marking soles.  Please bring an extra shoes with you, especially if the weather is bad.

HOW OLD ARE THE STUDENTS?
Our students ages have ranged from 16 to 65.  We have a wide range of different people taking the class

EXPERIENCE?
No experience is necessary with the beginner class.  With the Intermediate class you have to have completed our Beginner Series, or know the Lindy basics: swing outs, tuck turn, circle, and partner charleston.

IS THERE ANYWHERE TO DANCE SOCIALLY OUTSIDE THE CLASS?
To see the dance come out to our monthly dance nights with live jazz bands at Pepper Jack Cafe, www.pepperjackcafe.com.  The best part about learning the dance is coming out, meeting people, listening to good music and having fun social dancing!

WHAT IS THE SOLO VINTAGE JAZZ & CHARLESTON CLASS?
It's a great chance to learn original vintage jazz moves including Suzy Q, Charleston, Tacky-Annie and so on.  We place these together is fun routines. The focus is on movement and the spirit of the moves, and fun, rather than perfect technique.  Learn to dance like a flapper!  No partner needed but some dance experience required and both guys and gals are welcome!   See this you tube clip to see the legendary dancers doing charleston, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s58iTzznkp0
