HCA Opera Workshop presents Love Triangles
The HCA Opera Workshop is pleased to announce its spring production. On May 7, 8, and 9 we will be presenting Love Triangles: Three Short Comic Operas
A loving wife… a jealous husband… an air of deceit…a carefully guarded secret….all this is at the core of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s opera Susanna’s Secret. Returning home one afternoon Count Gil notices the odor of tobacco and imagines that Susanna, his bride of only one month, is carrying on a clandestine affair. Of course she denies everything, but when he leaves again her guilty secret is revealed.
In Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone, Ben comes to visit Lucy at her apartment because he wants to propose to her before he leaves on a trip. Despite his attempts to get her attention for sufficient time to ask his question, Lucy is occupied with interminable conversations on the telephone. Not wanting to miss his train, Ben leaves without asking Lucy for her hand in marriage. But Ben makes one last attempt…
Our third opera is Douglas Moore’s, Gallantry. This work is a sharp parody of a soap opera, complete with commercial interruptions. The surgeon loves the anaesthetist who is engaged to the hospital executive. Passion and even attempted murder will keep you in stitches. This is a highly recommended piece from one of America’s foremost twentieth-century opera composers.
Come and join us for a fabulous evening of light hearted opera, and if you bring you mother to our May 9th matinee performance, her ticket will be half price. No matter which performance you attend, remember to buy your tickets early as past performances have sold out.
