Join us for an 8-week Russian Theatre course that delves into Chekhov's The Wedding.

The Wedding is a one-act play that premiered in Moscow in November of 1900.  Tolstoy, that giant of Russian literature, was in attendance and found the piece uproarious.  Nuptial ceremonies seemed to occupy much of Chekhov’s imagination in the 1880s as many of his stories from that time centre on marriage.  The Wedding chronicles one family’s post-nuptial feast.

Chekhov roasts the rural Russian wedding, shattering the pretenses of social convention and exposing the truth that lies beneath.  The groom is most concerned with securing the meagre dowry that has yet to be paid.  The taciturn bride seems detached, at best.  Her ebullient parents fumble to put on a showy event well beyond their means and social status.  The guests all pursue their own agendas, barely acknowledging the real reason for the gathering.  The feast trips along until…  The mother of the bride has asked a dear friend to purchase the services of a decorated general, an unknown yet illustrious guest whose lofty speech will bless the couple’s union.  The mother’s dear friend, however, has pocketed the cash and brought an old deaf naval officer he found who had nothing better to do.  The glorious oration of this keynote speaker proves to be incoherent blather.  The final straw.  Constructed pretenses collapse.  Frayed nerves explode.  This most sacrosanct of celebrations devolves into hilarious buffoonery.  Chekhov’s lampoon, however, is underscored by a dark uneasiness: the characters are stripped of their celebratory masks to reveal the detachment and self-interest that guide each of them.

We’ll build The Wedding using collaborative ensemble improv, collective movement and choral chant.  Actors, singers, musicians welcome!

This course is geared towards adults and young adults.
