David Braid with Mike Murley and “The North” Quartet
November 12, 2017, 2:00 pm
Creating original music combining the experiences of jazz musicians living in Canada and Scandinavia, The North is a quartet led by two of Canada’s finest multi-Juno Award winning jazz musicians and long-time collaborators David Braid and Mike Murley.
Hailed in the Canadian press as “one of his country’s true renaissance men when it comes to music” (The Ottawa Citizen), and “a jazz genius to call our own” (Maclean’s Magazine), composer and pianist David Braid is a Steinway Artist, seven-time Juno nominee, and winner of two Juno Awards for his solo piano recordings. His arrangements and compositions were an integral part of the Chet Baker-inspired film, ’Born to Be Blue’ and his jazz score received praise for its “contemporary patina without sacrificing period authenticity” (The Times, UK). He also won ’Best Original Score’ and ’Best Original Song’ at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards.
An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Mike Murley is one of Canada’s most celebrated and well-respected jazz artists. Currently active as a leader in various formations from duo to septet, Murley also maintains a busy schedule as both a sideman and an educator as Chair of the University of Toronto Jazz Program. He has played on twelve Juno Award-winning recordings since 1990.
For more than two decades, drummer Anders Mogensen has been one of the most sought after musicians on the Danish as well as the International Jazz scene. Hailing from Finland and one of the busiest bass players in Sweden, Johnny Åman rounds out the group’s rhythm section.
